Sumatra is Rising: A Journey of Resilience, Renewal, and Responsible Travel

If you’ve been watching the news over the last few months of 2025, you likely saw the headlines. It’s true—late last year brought us a challenge unlike any we have seen in decades. The arrival of "Cyclone Senyar" brought unprecedented rains to our beautiful island, testing the strength of our mountains and the spirit of our people.
But if there is one thing you should know about Sumatra, it is that we are as resilient as the Merapi volcano and as warm as the morning sun over Lake Toba.
As we step into 2026, the clouds have parted, the rivers are settling, and the jungle canopy is more vibrant than ever. We are writing this update to give you an honest, on-the-ground look at what has changed, how we are adapting to keep you safe, and why now is actually one of the most meaningful times to visit.

The Imminent Impact: A Landscape Transformed

The floods of late 2025 were a wake-up call from nature. The sheer volume of water impacted the infrastructure in specific regions, particularly the Trans-Sumatra Highway and the scenic Lembah Anai valley in West Sumatra.
However, it is important to distinguish between the "news reel" and the reality of your holiday.
  • The Safe Zones: We are thrilled to report that Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang—two of our most beloved destinations—remained largely safe. The geography of the Toba Caldera protected it from the worst of the runoff, and the hotels there are open and peaceful.
  • The "Super Bloom": The rains have left behind a silver lining. The rainforests have drunk deep from the storms and are currently experiencing a "super bloom." The greenery is lush, the waterfalls are thundering with majestic power, and the wildlife in the Leuser Ecosystem is thriving.

What We Are Doing: Safety & The "Fly-and-Stay" Strategy

As your travel partner, we have had to evolve. We realized quickly that the old way of touring—long overland bus journeys from North to South—is currently not the most comfortable option due to road repairs.
Here is how we are adapting to ensure your adventure is seamless:
  1. The "Fly & Stay" Pivot: We have introduced new itineraries that utilize domestic flights to hop between major hubs (like Medan to Padang). This allows us to bypass the road construction zones entirely, giving you more time to relax at the destination and less time in traffic.
  2. Real-Time Verification: We don’t guess; we verify. We have established a "Driver Network" across the island. Every morning, our local team reports on road conditions. If a route isn't 100% safe, we have a Plan B ready before you even finish your coffee.
  3. Eco-Vetting: We are using this pause to audit our supply chain. We are prioritizing partners who practice sustainable waste management and have zero links to the deforestation that exacerbates floods.

What Society is Doing: Gotong Royong in Action

The most inspiring part of the last few months has been witnessing Gotong Royong—the Indonesian spirit of mutual aid.
  • Community Guardians: In the villages, neighbors didn't just wait for aid; they became the aid. Communities are now working hand-in-hand to replant riverbanks with bamboo and native trees to prevent future erosion. The local people are reclaiming their role as guardians of the forest.
  • Government Accountability: There is a new wave of environmental consciousness. The government has taken firm steps, revoking permits for companies involved in illegal logging and committing significant funds to "build back green," ensuring that new infrastructure respects the natural flow of our waterways.
